Joe Gamm – News & Record – GREENSBORO — It would be difficult for Greensboro to be a vibrant, healthy city when its most underserved citizens are unwell.
They may lack good health, meals, shelter or information about receiving services.
Cone Health, the Greensboro Police Department and other organizations will reach out to offer services to Greensboro’s chronically unsheltered population.
The collective’s third such effort will happen from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Greensboro Urban Ministry, 305 W. Gate City Blvd., according to Ron Flack, a Cone Health Nursing Department administrative coordinator.
“We’re expecting a very large crowd,” he said.
Health workers will conduct health assessments for participants.
Organizers will give out clothing, hygiene packs and box lunches.
They also will offer spiritual counseling, Greensboro police spokeswoman Susan Danielsen said.
“Numerous churches will be there to help provide services for people,” she said. “They will talk with people and see if there are any special needs they have that the collective group can help them with.”
It is the first event since the Guilford County Family Justice Center opened in Greensboro in June.
The center is a one-stop resource for victims of abuse or domestic violence where they can get health assessments, talk to detectives, obtain protective orders, apply for emergency shelter or receive other social services and get legal advice.
“If we see or suspect signs of some type of domestic violence, we would encourage (the victims) to go to the Family Justice Center,” Danielsen said. “If we see some child has been exposed to some kind of trauma, we will hook them up with social services.”
Organizers expect a crowd.
More than 100 people attended each of the first two events, Flack said. However, because they happened outside the downtown area, some people had to be brought in by bus. They chose not to go, Flack said.
“This is the first time we’ve had it at Urban Ministry,” he said. “We’re expecting a very large crowd. We’re prepared for more than 200.”
