Kathy Robertson – Sacramento Business Journal – Soon, the Sacramento Regional Family Justice Center will offer victims of domestic violence and human trafficking all the basic services they need in one place.
The idea was spearheaded by former district attorney and current justice center foundation board chair Jan Scully. The nonprofit organization provides assistance and support to victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.
More than 80 agencies serve this population, but many victims are not aware of the services available or how to get them. The new center will be located in unused space at the courthouse on Power Inn Road. Sacramento County subleases the space and will continue to pay rent until the contract expires on Oct. 31, 2019. The family justice center will pay utilities and operational costs.
“It is my priority to not only prosecute abusers and sex traffickers, but to also ensure their victims receive the services they need to stay safe,” District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said in a news release.
Currently, victims “kind of have to go all over,” said James Tiehm, a Family Law Center attorney in Sacramento who does volunteer work with the WEAVE legal advisory committee. They go to the courthouse for a restraining order, Tiehm said. Shelters are located around the city. Counseling may be offered someplace else. Transportation is a problem. Consolidation fixes those problems.
The new center is expected to serve about 1,500 people per year.
