Do You Need a Paramedic?

Developed by the San Diego Fire Department and the Alliance, this 30-minute training video was intended to assist front-line paramedics in assessing a strangled patient. This video covers best practices for paramedics and law enforcement when arriving at a domestic violence/strangulation crime scene. It identifies signs and symptoms of strangulation, introduces tools for paramedics, and discusses the body’s physiological response to strangulation. This tool is intended to help professionals better understand the dynamics of a strangulation assault in order to provide best possible services using trauma informed techniques. The video accomplishes this by giving testimony from experts, as well as providing examples of paramedic responses to a strangulation assault through a mock DV/strangulation call.
