Elder Strangulation and Abuse
Candace Heisler and Dr. Elizabeth Bloemen will provide an update in the field of elder strangulation including new research, laws, and case law. The panelists will discuss recent case studies and emerging issues.
Lethality in elder strangulation cases is high because of assumptions that any physical injuries or mental deficiencies are a result of aging, and that death is from old age. There is a lack of research and documentation of elder strangulation cases. There is a need for increased awareness, discussions, and education on this topic.
Candace and Dr. Bloemen will discuss the importance on providing information on comprehensive forensic exams in elder abuse cases and training for APS workers, law enforcement, health care providers, advocates, senior centers, and multi-disciplinary professionals.
